It was Acceptable in the 90s!
I remember the 'typical' wedding in the 90s, and I will use my own as a reference, but essentially, you booked a registry office (as I did) or a church, paid the fee, and got on with the business of flowers, attire and guest lists (the 'diplomatic' bit!). Despite shelling out all that money, we (couples of the nineties) didn't really think about the main, most important bit- the ceremony! Vows were standard, you got the person you got to do the service, and everyone attended,

I am a Celebrant- a Career of Dreams!
It was at a funeral for the father of a close friend that I had a career-changing epiphany. The celebrant guided us through the most wonderful service of memories, songs, photographs and words, with such warmth and understanding of her subject that it felt as if she had known him all her life.
